چکیده

Strongly correlated quantum fluids are phases of matter that are intrinsically quantum mechanical and that do not have a simple description in terms of weakly interacting quasiparticles. Two systems that have recently attracted a great deal of interest are the quark–gluon plasma, a plasma of strongly interacting quarks and gluons produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions, and ultracold atomic Fermi gases, very dilute clouds of atomic gases confined in optical or magnetic traps. These systems differ by 19 orders of magnitude in temperature, but were shown to exhibit very similar hydrodynamic flows. In particular, both fluids exhibit a robustly low shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, which is characteristic of quantum fluids described by holographic duality, a mapping from strongly correlated quantum field theories to weakly curved higher dimensional classical gravity. Shear viscosity is a measure of the amount of dissipation in a simple fluid. In kinetic theory shear viscosity is related to the rate of momentum transport by quasi-particles, and the uncertainty relation suggests that the ratio of shear viscosity η to entropy density s in units of h̄/kB is bounded by a constant. Here, h̄ is Planck’s constant and kB is Boltzmann’s constant. A specific bound has b...

The physics of dipolar bosonic quantum gases

This article reviews the recent theoretical and experimental advances in the study of ultracold gases made of bosonic particles interacting via the longrange, anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction, in addition to the short-range and isotropic contact interaction usually at work in ultracold gases. The specific properties emerging from the dipolar interaction are emphasized, from the meanfield r...

Momentum-Resolved Bragg Spectroscopy in Optical Lattices

Strongly correlated many-body systems show various exciting phenomena in condensed matter physics such as high-temperature superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. Recently, strongly correlated phases could also be studied in ultracold quantum gases possessing analogies to solid-state physics, but moreover exhibiting new systems such as Fermi-Bose mixtures and magnetic quantum phases w...

Quantum polarization spectroscopy of ultracold spinor gases.

We propose a method for the detection of ground state quantum phases of spinor gases through a series of two quantum nondemolition measurements performed by sending off-resonant, polarized light pulses through the gas. Signatures of various mean-field as well as strongly correlated phases of F=1 and F=2 spinor gases obtained by detecting quantum fluctuations and mean values of polarization of t...

On the possibility of “ correlation cooling ” of ultracold ionic gases

Recent experiments with ultracold neutral plasmas show an intrinsic heating effect based on the development of spatial correlations, which has been termed " correlation heating ". We investigate whether this effect can be reversed, so that imposing strong spatial correlations could in fact lead to cooling. We find that cooling is indeed possible. It requires, however, a very precise preparation...
